I am a part of the technology committee at our school, and today we are delivering a series of presentations related to technology use in the classroom. I was selected to present on the use of wikis in education. If you wish, you can download my digital collaboration presentation.
So I’ve been tasked with being my department’s new media guru, which is pretty scary considering how little I know about new media. The main reason for this is because of my use of Blogger in my Freshman Comp. II class and the creation of Comp. Program Wiki. Herein lies a problem; most faculty and instructors here are too intimidated to try these out for themselves. Would you be opposed to me using or posting (on our Wiki) your presentation as a “comforting” factor? If not, I completely understand, but I thought it was worth asking.

Brad – thanks for posting this presentation – I found it very useful in understanding the steps necessary for creating a successful wiki. Danika also uses wikis in her literature circles and she has found the wiki to be the most effective web 2.0 tool so far – better in her view than student blogs or edmodo. She found the richness of the collaborative commenting for literature circles quite effective. Since I can’t try this out in a high school classroom, I plan to try and use a class wiki for the ABQ course I will be teaching in the new year – your presentation was very helpful – which wiki platform do you recommend?
Good question, Wendy. I have had the most consistent success with Wikispaces. They offer a special free package for educators, which eliminates all advertising on the site and allows for a completely private space. I’m hoping to play with GoogleSites and even GoogleWave next semester, so I’ll keep you posted on those applications.
